The town was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. Sites of interest in Wellington include the Church of St John the Baptist, which dates from the fifteenth-century and is a Grade I listed building. Longforth Farm is the site of a Bronze Age landscape and a medieval structure. Wellington Museum explores the history of the town, including its links with the woollen industry. The museum is housed in a Grade II listed building. The Wellington Monument lies 1.9 miles south of the town and is Grade II* listed. It was constructed between 1817 and 1854 to commemorate the Duke of Wellington's victory at the Battle of Waterloo. Tone Dale House is a Grade II listed country house built during the nineteenth-century.
